Baptism of Children

The Sacrament of Baptism is the “door to the church.” It begins our faith journey and brings us into the Church – the Body of Christ.

Scheduling a Baptism
We are always delighted to welcome children into our faith community. Parents should contact the Pastoral Care Office at (716) 283-2238 or stjohndelasalle@outlook.com soon after the birth of the child, to arrange the Baptism preparation class, held on the last Wednesday of each month. Baptisms are usually scheduled for the first and third Sundays of the month after 4:30 p.m. or 11:15 a.m. Mass, or they can be celebrated during the 4:30 p.m. or 11:15 a.m. Mass.

Choosing Baptism
The decision to baptize your child is a joyful but serious commitment. Parents are the first teachers of their children in the ways of our faith. Parents set an example by:

  • Attending Sunday Mass regularly
  • Talking with their children about the love of God
  • Sharing Bible stories and praying at home
  • Living lives of service and compassion

Choosing Godparents
When choosing godparents, please choose people who will support you in raising your children to know the love of God. Church Law states that a godparent must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation and be over the age of 16. A godparent must be actively practicing the faith; if not a parishioner of St. John de LaSalle, the person must obtain a letter from their pastor stating that the person meets the requirements to be a godparent.
