Adoration

of the Blessed Sacrament

The Blessed Sacrament is exposed in St. John's Chapel every Thursday from 7:45 A.M. to Midnight. Participants can spend 30 minutes to 1 hour (or, at whatever time is most convenient for them) in prayer or spiritual reading. Adoration is closed silently by the last person adoring the Blessed Sacrament from 11:00 P.M. to midnight.

History about the Holy Eucharist

WE, AS CATHOLICS, BELIEVE IN THE REAL PRESENCE OF JESUS IN THE HOLY EUCHARIST. WE BELIEVE THAT JESUS IS PRESENT, BODY AND BLOOD, SOUL AND DIVINITY IN THE EUCHARIST. DURING THE MASS, AT THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST, BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE BREAD AND WINE IS CHANGED INTO THE BODY AND BLOOD OF OUR LORD, JESUS CHRIST. FOLLOWING THIS MIRACLE, THE FAITHFUL RECEIVE THE EUCHARIST IN HOLY COMMUNION. CONSECRATED HOSTS REMAINING AFTER THIS ARE RESERVED IN THE TABERNACLE TO BE USED AS VIATICUM - THE BREAD OF LIFE GIVEN TO THOSE WHO ARE SICK OR DYING AND FOR EXPOSITION DURING EUCHARISTIC ADORATION.

DURING ADORATION, A SPECIAL CONSECRATED HOST IS PLACED IN A SPECIAL RECEPTACLE, CALLED A MONSTRANCE. THE MONSTRANCE IS PLACED UPON THE ALTAR. THIS IS AN INVITATION FOR THE FAITHFUL TO COME BEFORE OUR GOD TO ADORE HIM, OFFER THANKSGIVING, PRAY FOR REPARATION OF SINS AND OFFER UP OUR PETITIONS. IT IS A TIME TO "WAIT AND WATCH" AND CONTEMPLATE THE PRESENCE OF JESUS . AS CHILDREN IN CATHOLIC SCHOOL, WE WERE URGED TO "MAKE A VISIT", TO GO SAY HELLO TO JESUS, WHO WAITS PATIENTLY FOR US TO APPROACH HIM IN A ONE ON ONE SITUATION.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION HAS BEEN A WEEKLY DEVOTION AT ST JOHN DE LASALLE CHURCH FOR THE LAST 25 YEARS. IT BEGAN WITH ONE MAN'S VISION, GEORGE STEINBRONNER. RECEIVING SUPPORT FROM THEN PASTOR, MSGR. ROBERT HOGAN, ADORATION BEGAN AFTER A WEEKEND OF EXPLANATION AND ENROLLMENT. EVERY THURSDAY, ADORATION BEGINS AFTER 7:15 AM MASS AND CONTINUES UNTIL MIDNIGHT. "ADORERS" COMMIT TO ONE HOUR, TO ENSURE THAT THE EUCHARIST IS NOT LEFT UNATTENDED. MANY OF OUR CURRENT ADORERS HAVE BEEN COMING SINCE ADORATION BEGAN 25 YEARS AGO! HOWEVER, MORE INDIVIDUALS ARE NEEDED TO COVER EACH HOUR FROM 8 AM THRU MIDNIGHT.

AN HOUR OF ADORATION ALLOWS FOR A RESPITE FROM EVERYDAY WORRIES, CARES, AND FRUSTRATIONS. IT PROVIDES TIME TO SIMPLY SIT WITH THE LORD AND RECEIVE THE GRACES THAT FLOW FROM THE EUCHARIST. IT IS A TIME FOR PRAYER OR CONTEMPLATION. IT IS A TIME TO JUST BE THERE. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BECOMING AN ADORER, CALL FRANCES AT 405-7078 OR LAURIE AT 283-5473.
